Pregunta guía y ruta metodológica | Guiding question and methodological roadmap

Una vez entendida la relación entre patrimonio vivo y comunicación-conexión comunitaria dentro de un contexto en constante amenaza de violencia espacial como Moravia, nos preguntamos: Once we have understood the relationship between living heritage and communication-community connection within a context in constant threat of spatial violence such as Moravia, we ask ourselves:

Nuestro marco se basa en la literatura sobre el ‘capital social’. Según Vilar y Cartes (2016), el capital social es visto como las características inherentes de una serie de relaciones sociales basadas en la confianza y la cooperación. A partir de la idea de tres escalas de redes sociales: vínculos, puentes y enlaces.

Our framework builds on the literature on social capital. According to Vilar and Cartes (2016), social capital is seen as the inherent characteristics of a series of social relationships based on trust and cooperation. Based on the idea about three scales of social networks: bonding, bridging, and linking.

Dentro de las dimensiones antes mencionadas reconfiguramos los hallazgos de nuestra investigación a través del caso de estudio de Moravia Resiste. Posteriormente, analizamos las necesidades de la comunidad en cada dimensión y comenzamos el proceso de co-producción de las propuestas de intervención:

  • Vincular (Intergeneracionales), que busca fortalecer las relaciones entre diferentes generaciones.
  • Puentes (Interculturales), que permiten que diferentes comunidades de diferentes orígenes compartan información relevante y organicen acciones colectivas.
  • Enlaces (Interescalareses), que enfatizan las conexiones entre comunidades e instituciones, así como también el conectarse con luchas similares en el mundo, sin importar los límites geográficos.

Within the dimensions above, we reconfigure the findings of our research through the Moravia Resiste case study. Subsequently, we analyze the needs of the community in each size and begin the co-production process of the intervention proposals:

  • Bonding (Intergenerational), which seeks to strengthen relationships between different generations.
  • Bridging (Intercultural), which allows different communities from different backgrounds to share relevant information and organize collective action.
  • Linking (Interscalar), which emphasizes the connections between communities and institutions and connects with similar struggles in the world, regardless of geographical limits.

Desarrollo de la estratega de reportería socio-espacial 

Nuestro plan de acción se basa en nuestro marco teórico con las siguientes estrategias socio-espaciales para cada dimensión e intersección. 

  • Primero, se propone una visualización del glosario para la dimensión de vínculos intergeneracionales. 
  • En segundo lugar, para la intersección entre vínculos intergeneracionales y puentes interculturales , difundimos las visualizaciones del glosario en el espacio físico.
  • En tercer lugar, para los puentes interculturales, se proponen intervenciones físicas por medio de un artefacto móvil de proyección y retransmisión de asambleas comunitarias. El cual podrá realizar diferentes trayectorias espaciales conectando puntos estratégicos de Moravia.  
  • Además, para la intersección entre los  puentes interculturales y los enlaces interespaciales se propone incluir tableros informativos y muebles físicos dentro de los puntos estratégicos para las retransmisiones.
  • Por último, se utiliza una estrategia transmedia para responder a la dimensión de los enlaces interespaciales. 

The plan of action responds to our theoretical framework with the following socio-spatial strategies for each dimension and intersection: 

  • First, a glossary visualization for the bonding (intergenerational) dimension.
  • Second, we spread the glossary visualisations in the physical space or the intersection between bonding (intergenerational) and bridging (intercultural).
  • Third, for bridging (intercultural), physical interventions are proposed by means of a mobile device for the projection and retransmission of community assemblies, which will carry out different spatial trajectories connecting strategic points in Moravia.
  • Then, for the intersection between bridging (intercultural) and linking (interscalar), it is proposed to include information boards and physical furniture within the aforementioned strategic points for broadcasts.
  • Finally, a transmedia strategy for the linking (interscalar) dimension.

Este plan de acción combina estrategias socio-espaciales tanto virtuales como físicas. Además, es necesario aclarar que cada dimensión no funciona de forma aislada. En su lugar, se enfatiza la interconexión entre todas, para de esta forma constituir a la comunicación-conexión comunitaria como una herramienta de conservación del patrimonio vivo y la defensa del territorio como resultado. This action plan combines both virtual and physical socio-spatial strategies. Moreover, it is necessary to clarify that each dimension does not work individually. Instead, the interconnection between all of them is emphasized to constitute the communication-community connection to enable its use as a tool for the conservation of living heritage and the defense of the territory as a result.

El plan de acción también se basa en cinco de los principios del Atlas, que hemos adaptado para responder a nuestras conversaciones con nuestros socios, así como a las nuevas luchas que enfrentan las comunidades. Los principios y pautas correspondientes son los siguientes:

  1. Espacialización: espacializar los resultados de las acciones comunicativas.
  2. Mostrando el Valor: mostrar el valor de la comunicación como herramienta para el aprendizaje urbano y la defensa del territorio frente a la renovación y el desplazamiento urbano.
  3. Comprensión: comprender la trayectoria de Moravia a lo largo de su historia, como para dilucidar su potencial para el futuro.
  4. Difundir: difundir el resultado de las acciones comunicativas como método de aprendizaje del patrimonio vivo.
  5. Comunicarse equitativamente: reconocer por igual a todos los actores involucrados en el proceso y en todos los espacios involucrados, a través del respeto y trato equitativo.

The plan of action also builds on five of the Atlas’ principles, which we have adapted to respond to our conversations with our partners and new struggles faced by communities. The principles and corresponding guidelines are the following:

  1. Spatializing: to spatialize the results of communicative actions.
  2. Showing the Value: to show the value of communication as a tool for urban learning and the defense of the territory against urban renewal and displacement. 
  3. Comprehending: to comprehend the trajectory of Moravia throughout its history, as to elucidate its potential for the future.
  4. Disseminating: to disseminate the result of communicative actions as a method of learning living heritage.
  5. Communicating equitably: to recognize, equally, all the actors involved in the process and all the concerned spaces could understand that through respect and equitable treatment.

Propuestas para el futuro urbano de Moravia 

Propuesta para los Vínculos | Bonding Proposal

Una de las acciones de Moravia Resiste fue recopilar términos y expresiones que pudieran ser entendidos por personas de cualquier edad, para facilitar la comunicación entre ellos. Queríamos que este glosario también fuera accesible para todas las generaciones, por eso comenzamos con una ilustración de algunos de sus términos. Esta estrategia tiene como objetivo promover la transmisión de expresiones e historias de resistencia (recreando experiencias como la de Julieta), promoviendo así la cohesión y comunicación comunitaria.

One of Moravia Resiste’s actions was to compile terms and expressions which could be understood by people of any age, to facilitate communication between them. We wanted this glossary itself also to be accessible to all generations, which is why we started with an illustration of sure of its terms. This strategy aims to promote the transmission of expressions and stories of resistance (hence recreating experiences like that of Julieta), thus promoting community cohesion and communication.

Propuesta para la intersección de los Vínculos y Puentes | Intersection of Bonding and Bridging Proposals

El siguiente paso sería llevar estas conversaciones intergeneracionales a espacios compartidos por diferentes comunidades, para expandir la escala de estas discusiones a una audiencia más amplia. Esto se puede hacer a través de:

The next step would be to bring these cross-generational conversations to spaces shared by different communities to expand the scale of these discussions to a broader audience. This could be done through: 

  1. Exponer los carteles ilustrados en los espacios físicos utilizados por las comunidades para hacerlos más visibles y crear el espacio para posibles conversaciones sobre ellos. Exhibiting the illustrated posters in the physical spaces used by the communities to make them more discoverable and create the space for potential conversations about them. 
  2. Subir los mismos carteles en línea para que sean accesibles a una mayor variedad de personas. Uploading the same posters online to make them accessible to a bigger range of people.

Propuesta de Puentes | Bridging Proposal

Bridging es el acto de crear puentes entre diferentes culturas en el espacio. Los miembros de Moravia Resiste nos mostraron cómo las diferentes comunidades se unen en Moravia para compartir alimentos y discusiones, y queríamos que esta dimensión se construyera sobre estas dinámicas; fortaleciendo la comunicación comunitaria a través de dos intervenciones.

Bridging is the act of creating bridges between different cultures in space. Moravia Resiste members showed us how other communities come together in Moravia to share food and discussions. We wanted this next part to build on these processes; by strengthening community communication through two interventions.

El artefacto propuesto usa a la bicicleta como base de intervención, traduciéndola como el medio de transporte que también será la fuente verde de energía creada por el pedaleo los propios habitantes.The proposed artefact will thus start with the bicycle – a medium of transportation that will also be a green energy source powered by the pedaling of Moravia’s inhabitants themselves. 

El objeto final incluirá: una bicicleta (1), un transformador eléctrico (2), un proyector (3), parlantes (4), una pantalla plegable (5), un enrutador portátil (nuestros socios mencionaron repetidamente la falta de acceso a Internet , y esto también permitiría retransmisiones en directo de sus reuniones -6), una cámara web (para conectar todas las retransmisiones – 7) y un micrófono (8). Todos los objetos estarían contenidos dentro de dos bolsas para facilitar el transporte y la instalación.

The final object will include a bicycle (1), an electrical transformer (2), a projector (3), speakers (4), a foldable screen (5), a portable router (our partners repeatedly mentioned the lack of Internet access, and this would also allow for live retransmissions of their meetings -6), a webcam (to connect all the retransmissions – 7) and a microphone (8). All the objects would be contained inside two bags to facilitate easy transportation and setup.


La bicicleta en sí se convertiría en una actividad divertida que uniría a miembros de todas las edades de la comunidad.

The bicycle itself would become a fun activity that would join members of all ages of the community.

  1. Locaciones para las intervenciones físicas: nuevas trayectorias / Locations for the physical interventions: new trajectories   

La necesidad de descentralización y expansión del alcance en la comunicación-conexión comunitaria resultó evidente a partir del inicio de la pandemia en el territorio. Las asambleas presenciales desarrolladas en La Plaquita, sector característico para la toma de decisiones, ya no podían concentrar al mismo número de participantes debido a las restricciones dada la emergencia.  Además, los ejercicios de asambleas virtuales de Moravia Resiste resultaron fallidas dada la poca credibilidad y desconfianza de las mismas dentro de una sociedad que valora el poder y legitimidad de la reunión colectiva. 

The need for decentralization and expansion of community communication-connection became evident from the beginning of the pandemic in the territory. The face-to-face assemblies held in La Plaquita, the primary location for decision-making, could no longer bring together the same number of participants due to the restrictions given the emergency. In addition, Moravia Resiste’s virtual assemblies were unsuccessful given their low credibility and mistrust within a culture that values ​​the power and legitimacy of the collective meeting. 

En este contexto, propusimos un mapa de todos estos espacios descentralizados donde las comunidades podrían reunirse en torno al artefacto antes mencionado, en grupos más pequeños para ayudar a frenar los efectos de la pandemia. En el futuro, se espera que estas asambleas atraigan a más participantes e involucren a los habitantes más jóvenes de las comunidades a través del uso de la bicicleta y proyecciones.

Within this context, we proposed a map of all these decentralized spaces where the communities could meet around the artefact mentioned above- in smaller groups to help curb the effects of the pandemic. In the future, these assemblies are expected to attract more participants and involve the younger inhabitants of the communities through the use of the bicycle and projections.

Para las retransmisiones se escogieron nueve espacios abiertos representativos dentro cada sector de Moravia: 

  1. La Plaquita
  2. Centro de Desarrollo Cultural de Moravia
  3. Esquina de la Sede Comunal El Bosque
  4. Plazoleta de las estación Caribe
  5. El Morro
  6. Centro de Salud
  7. I.E. El Bosque
  8. El parqueadero de El Oasis
  9. Escaleras de El Oasis

For the broadcasts, nine representative open spaces were chosen within each sector of Moravia:

  1. La Plaquita
  2. Moravia’s Cultural Development Centre
  3. Communal Headquarters El Bosque 
  4. Caribbean Station Plazolette
  5. El Morro
  6. Health Centre
  7. E.I. El Bosque
  8. Parkinglot El Oasis
  9. El Oasis Stairs. 

Por medio de estos photo-collages, podemos evidenciar como este artefacto móvil marca el comienzo de la dinámica para la reunión de comunicación, interconectando diferentes generaciones, culturas y lugares, tanto en el espacio físico como en el virtual. Reforzando, de esta forma, los puentes interculturales mientras que conjuga transversalmente los vínculos intergeneracionales y los enlaces interespaciales. 

Through these different photo-collages, we can evidence how this artefact marks the beginning of the meeting dynamics for communication, connecting different generations, cultures and places, both in the physical and virtual space. Reinforcing, in this way, the intercultural dimension (bridging) while also cross-linking intergenerational (bonding) and interspatial (linking) spheres.

Propuesta de Puentes y Enlaces | Bridging and Linking Proposal

La intersección entre las dimensiones de los puentes (interculturales) y enlaces (interescalares) permitirá que estas conversaciones interculturales se expandan en el espacio físico y creen redes de cambio duraderas dentro y fuera de Moravia. Esta es la transición de la comunicación intercultural en el espacio físico a una comunicación más amplia entre escalas.

The intersection between the bridging and linking dimensions will allow for these intercultural conversations to expand in the physical space and create long-lasting networks of change within and outside of Moravia. This is the transition from cross-cultural communication in physical space to wider cross-scale communication.

La intervención radica en la adaptación de los espacios físicos a estas conversaciones, mediante la incorporación de paneles informativos y mobiliario modular de fácil construcción y movilización que se adapte a las necesidades de las personas. Los lugares compartidos se convertirán así en espacios de conversaciones compartidas, y las conversaciones compartidas se unirán para convertirse en una conciencia colectiva. De esta manera, el patrimonio vivo puede convertirse en parte del paisaje físico y las narrativas de las comunidades serán más fáciles de difundir a mayor escala.

The intervention lies in adapting the physical spaces to these conversations by adding information boards and easy to build and move modular furniture that adapts to the people’s needs. Shared places will thus become spaces of shared conversations, and shared conversations will tie together to become collective consciousness. This way, living heritage can become a part of the physical landscape, and the communities’ narratives will be easier to spread at larger scales.

Por lo tanto, la expansión de la comunicación y la conexión pasará de las conversaciones a pequeña escala a los procesos generalizados, siguiendo estos pasos:

  1. Conversaciones en grupos reducidos, con familias y vecinos, que generan opiniones específicas.
  2. Estas opiniones y debates se pueden llevar a los paneles de información a través de eslóganes o dibujos agradables a la vista que pueden llamar la atención de los transeúntes.
  3. Al pasar por diferentes vecindarios, los residentes pueden leer y comprender la posición de cada vecindario a través de esos gráficos claros. El mobiliario adaptable también estará disponible para desarrollarse en dichos espacios de debate, para permitir que las conversaciones cara a cara crezcan en torno a dichos conceptos.
  4. Después de comprender mejor las opiniones de los demás, se puede formar una cierta conciencia colectiva en todas las culturas, que luego podría extenderse a una escala mayor.

The expansion of communication and connection will hence shift from small-scale conversations to widespread processes, following these steps:

  1. Conversations in small groups with families and neighbours, which generate specific opinions.
  2. These opinions and debates can be taken to the information boards through visually pleasing slogans or drawings that spark a passerby’s attention.
  3. Passing through different neighborhoods, residents can thus read and understand each neighborhood’s position through those clear graphics. The adaptive furniture will also be available to develop in such spaces of debate, to allow for face-to-face conversations to grow around such concepts.
  4. After better understanding each other’s opinions, a certain collective consciousness can be formed across cultures, which could then be spread to a larger scale.

 

Propuesta de Enlaces | Linking Proposal

Vincular es relacionar comunidades más allá de las limitaciones físicas y geográficas. Esto es crucial para Moravia, cuyas poblaciones desplazadas buscan relacionarse con sus familias fuera del territorio, así como con comunidades internacionales, como nosotros.

To link is to relate communities beyond physical and geographical constraints. This is crucial for Moravia, whose displaced populations seek to relate to their families outside of the territory and international communities, like ourselves. 

Estrategia Trans-media / Trans-media Strategy 

  1. Potenciar el uso y conocimiento de las plataformas existentes a través de campañas online y físicas, utilizando los tableros físicos propuestos anteriormente. También crearemos puentes entre los espacios físicos y virtuales con el uso de códigos QR y diferentes hashtags. Boost the use and awareness of these existing platforms through online and physical campaigns, using the physical boards we proposed previously. We would also create bridges between the physical and virtual spaces with QR codes and hashtags.
  2. Invitar a todos los miembros de la comunidad a votar y ser parte del proceso de toma de decisiones. Luego de identificar las problemáticas en el primer paso, los habitantes podrán elegir los problemas más urgentes junto con sus propuestas para resolverlos. Este proceso podrá realizarse en paralelo en los espacios físicos (en los tableros propuestos así como también de manera interactiva durante las reuniones sugeridas), y en los espacios virtuales (con herramientas sencillas como son las encuestas de Facebook). Invite everyone from the community to vote and be a part of the decision-making process. After raising certain issues within the first step, the inhabitants would thus be able to choose the most pressing issues and their proposals. This process could be done in parallel in the physical spaces (on the proposed boards but also just show of hands during the proposed meetings) and in the virtual rooms (with easy steps like Facebook polls).
  3. Una vez que se haya alcanzado un consenso, el tema y las propuestas más urgentes se compartirán con los diseñadores y planificadores voluntarios en línea, mientras se asegura que el proceso sea de coproducción con las comunidades. Once a consensus has been reached, the most pressing issue and proposals would be brought to volunteer designers and planners online while making sure the process is co-production with the communities.
  4. Posteriormente, se podrá presentar el producto terminado a los municipios y actores formales. De esta manera, será menos probable que puedan contradecir las ideas de las comunidades si están bien diseñadas y se basan en un consenso. Subsequently, they can present the finished product to the municipalities and formal actors. They will be less likely to be able to counter the communities’ ideas if they’re well laid out and built on a consensus.
  5. Sin embargo, si los proyectos terminan siendo pasados por alto, las comunidades tendrán la posibilidad de hacer que sus voces sean escuchadas, independientemente de las limitaciones de los municipios, a través de la autoorganización para publicar masivamente su propuesta en línea y presionar a los actores formales al etiquetarlos junto con los principales medios de comunicación locales e internacionales. Por lo tanto, estarían creando su propia exposición, en lugar de esperar a ser “invitados a la mesa de diálogo” en el proceso formal de toma de decisiones. However, if the projects do end up being overlooked, the communities would have the possibilities to make their voices be heard, regardless of the municipalities’ constraints, through a self organization to mass post their proposal online, and apply pressure on formal actors by tagging them together with major local and international news outlets. They would thus be creating their exposure rather than wait to be ‘invited to the dialogue table in the formal decision-making process.

Cartel de la mesa de debate / Debate Table Poster:

Como primer ejemplo de la propuesta antes detallada, decidimos visualizar un debate actual que Moravia Resiste está impulsando: La necesidad de una nueva mesa de diálogo entre la comunidad y la Municipalidad. Para la cual, ilustramos a través de un infograma las razones por las cuales el actual espacio de debate preserva relaciones hegemónicas que se traducen en ineficacia hacia un objetivo comunitario, junto con los pasos alternativos que verdaderamente promoverán cambios duraderos. La ilustración de estos principios facilitará la circulación de la información entre las comunidades tanto en los espacios físicos como virtuales. 

As a first example of the former proposal, we decided to visualize a current debate that Moravia Resiste is promoting: the need for a new dialogue table between the community and Medellin’s formal institution. Through an infographic, we illustrate why the current debate space preserves hegemonic relations that translate into ineffectiveness towards a communal objective, along with the alternative steps that will genuinely promote lasting changes. Illustrating these principles will facilitate the circulation of information between communities in both physical and virtual spaces.

A un lado del cartel están las preocupaciones de las comunidades sobre el sistema de comunicación actual con los actores formales. Se dividen en cuatro: 

On one side of the poster are the concerns of the communities regarding the current system of communication with formal actors. They are divided into four:

  1. Que la mesa de diálogo se construya siguiendo las necesidades de una administración municipal temporal, sin presupuesto asignado para el espacio. That the dialogue table is built following the needs of a temporary municipal administration without an assigned budget for space.
  2. Que la mesa de diálogo no tenga un rumbo estratégico. That the dialogue table has no strategic direction.
  3. Que la mesa de diálogo no sea específica para Moravia y sus áreas de  influencia. That the dialogue table is not specific to Moravia and its areas of influence.
  4. Que la mesa de diálogo se centre solo en el aspecto de infraestructura en lugar de incluir todas las problemáticas. That the dialogue table is focused only on the infrastructure aspect rather than including all the problematics.

Sin embargo, no fue suficiente señalar simplemente las inconsistencias de esta mesa de diálogo, sino que fue crucial señalar también algunas alternativas:

However, it wasn’t enough to simply point out the inconsistencies of this dialogue table; but rather; it was crucial also to point out some alternatives: 

  1. Reconocer los derechos legales de los residentes de Moravia sobre su territorio. Recognize the legal rights of Moravian residents to their territory.
  2. Establecer elecciones populares abiertas a todos los residentes y organizaciones, para la configuración de la mesa. Establish popular open elections for all residents and organizations for the configuration of the table.
  3. Establecer horarios de participación adaptados a los horarios de los residentes. Establish participation hours adapted to the residents’ schedules.
  4. Incluir disciplinas ambientales, sociales y urbanas al proceso. Include environmental, social and urban disciplines in the process.
